Holly Springs Elementary STEM Academy (HSES) has been considered the defining aspect of the community for many years. Generation after generation of the same families have attended and supported the school.
The first public school located in the Holly Springs Community was established in 1868. The first school to bear the name Holly Springs was built around 1900, and was approximately one-quarter mile north of the railroad depot just off Highway 5. The wooden structure was replaced in 1956 by a new brick and steel structure which was the home of Holly Springs School for the next forty-three years. Cherokee County School District began construction of the current Holly Springs Elementary STEM Academy on Hickory Road in October, 1997. This building was occupied January 19, 1999.
Holly Springs is one of Cherokee County School District’s four Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Academies. All students in Kindergarten through fifth grade participate in STEM project-based learning and utilize the engineering design process to problem solve in all content areas. Students from outside the Holly Springs district interested in STEM curriculum are able to apply to attend Holly Springs Elementary STEM Academy.
Students participate in extracurricular programs at the school and county levels including Art Club, Chorus, F.I.S.H., Reading Bowl, Jump Rope for Heart, National Junior Beta Club, PTA Reflections, Wildcat Ambassadors, Science Olympiad, Student Council, Tech Club, and WPAWS News.
The teachers at Holly Springs implement the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Reading, English Language Arts, and Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Daily lesson plans document the use of these state academic standards. In order to meet the needs of diverse learners, teachers use a variety of instructional strategies in their classrooms. Art, Physical Education, and Music are also offered on a rotational basis. The Media Center is a welcoming hub where students foster a love of reading, build information literacy skills, and learn to find and use information effectively in support of classroom standards. Holly Springs is a great place to learn!
